Koboi Balik Lagi suggests that home lies as much in close personal relationships as in place. This metonymic sense of nation is exemplified in 4 Ikatan Pertiwi (4 Ties of Nation) in which Malaysia is embodied in the Koboi's relatives. The ‘Chinese’ gentleman in the photograph, Uncle Kay Kim, is related to the ‘Indians’ - my parents, my cousin Gana and her husband Jega, by marriage. Contrary to appearances, he is family.  He belongs to the long settled Peranakan diaspora, which has oriented itself to the informing images of Malay culture and identity. Such is the nation. Indeed, Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim is Malaysia’s pioneering and pre-eminent historian. Among his many contributions to public life is his co-authorship of the foundational Rukunegara or National Principles, instituted after the racial riots of May 13th 1969. A photograph of Uncle Kay Kim, standing close by, signifies Malaysia as well as any wide vista or landscape.
